When you’re travelling with kids there are a few ways to keep them safe and comfortable on board. Follow our tips for soothing earache, understand what facilities are available and, if you’re bringing a car seat, make sure it’s an approved type.

Kids’ ears

Changes in cabin air pressure may cause earache or discomfort to your children, particularly during take off and landing. To help make things easier, feed your infant or give them a dummy. Older children can chew lollies, drink or blow their noses. All these things help ears to ‘pop’.

If earache is causing your infant to cry, let them. It’s a really effective way to equalise their ears. Don’t worry about the other passengers, plenty of them are parents too.

Baby changing

All Jetstar A320/321 and 787 aircraft have bathrooms fitted with baby change tables and disposal. Always change your baby in the bathroom, you must not use the seat tray tables.

Changes in diet and eating habits can cause upset stomachs so it’s best to bring more nappies than normal. We don’t carry spare nappies on our flights.

Feeding your family

You are welcome to breastfeed your baby whenever suits you. On board we only have small sachets of UHT milk to serve with tea and coffee so, if your baby needs bottled milk during the flight, you will need to bring your own. The same applies for baby formula and food, we don’t carry any kind on-board.

We can help heat up baby bottles when time permits. We can’t heat bottles during food and drinks service and it may take time as our planes are not fitted with microwave ovens. None of our planes have fridges so we cannot store perishable food.

For children and adults Jetstar offers a range of meals and snacks.

Some countries, like Australia, stop you bringing certain foods into the country. Remember to clear out uneaten snacks in your kids’ bags. 

Seatbelts and car seats

If you’re travelling with a car seat for your child or infant, they must be restrained in the car seat when the seatbelt sign is on, or on your lap with an infant seatbelt. It’s usually best to leave your seatbelts on when sitting so we won’t need to wake you in case of unexpected turbulence.

Slings and baby carriers

You can use a baby carrier, sling or harness during boarding, in-flight when the seatbelt sign is off, and disembarkation.

They must not be used in-flight when the seatbelt sign is on, including during take-off, descent and in any other event as instructed by the crew. During these times an infant must be seated on an adult’s lap and secured with an infant seatbelt.

Infant seatbelts

We’ll provide infant seatbelts if you’re travelling with your child on your lap. It connects to your own and you must wear it whenever the seatbelt sign is on. When you board, let us know that you’ll have your child on your lap and we’ll show you how to use the infant seatbelt.

Infant car seats

When you’ve booked a seat for your child you can bring a car seat for them to sit in. The car seat does not impact your carry-on baggage allowance. The car seat must meet regulatory requirements. We’ll attach a restraint and put the car seat on a window seat, not in an emergency exit row.

If your child weighs more than 18kg they cannot fly in an Australian designed car seat. You need to book a normal fare. Unapproved car seats or customers travelling on a Jetstar flight on the Q300 aircraft with a car seat must check it in, but this will not impact your checked baggage allowance and will be carried for free.

Australian-designed car seats on Jetstar flights must:

  • Have Australian Standard Sticker AS1754 attached  
  • Fit on an airline seat
  • Allow the seat in front to recline
  • Be in good condition, showing no signs of damage
  • Let us know you’re bringing a car seat by contacting customer service.

Jetstar Asia flights cannot accept Australian-designed car seats on board the aircraft. They may accept car seats that meet the criteria below. All Australian-designed car seats must be checked in on Jetstar Asia (3K) flights.

US-designed car seats on Jetstar flights must:

  • Comply with the US Standard FMVSS213
  • Have a FAA (Federal Aviation Association) sticker that reads, ‘Certified for motor vehicles and aircraft.’
  • Be in good condition, showing no signs of damage

Car seats designed in other countries will be assessed on their design and condition. They must:

  • Have a well defined shell that is connected securely to any under-structure 
  • Have a single release harness that secures your child’s lap belt, and torso and shoulder traps. It cannot be unreasonably easy for your child to undo
  • Have straps that are at least 2.5cm wide
  • Have strap adjusters that need upward lift to release
  • Be in good condition, showing no signs of damage
  • Be quick and easy to secure or remove your child
  • Conform to NZ Standard 5411 (for New Zealand designed seats)
  • Conform to European Standard ECE4L (For European seats)

Rear facing car seats

Generally we don’t give our approval to rear-facing car seats. They usually inhibit the seat in front from reclining. We can approve your rear-facing car seat if a family member or friend sits in the seat in front and is happy for their seat to remain upright for the flight. If your rear-facing seat is Australian designed the top restraint points are usually too far for the straps to reach.

Booster seats

It isn’t safe for infants and small children to sit on booster seats or cushions during takeoff and landing. The rapid shifts in speed can cause these items to slip out from under them and make the seatbelts ineffective.

CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) restraint

Jetstar accepts the use of Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES), restraints on flights operated in Australia. The product has been endorsed by the US FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the NTSB (National Transport Safety Bureau) for carriage on aircraft and is the only commercial restraint device to be certified by the FAA as an alternative to a car seat.

We cannot assist with fitting the restraint in-flight. We’ll ask you to ensure the restraint is used in line with its original operating manual. We also ask that the restraint remains in its original manufactured condition, including all labels.

CARES is designed specifically for aviation use for children age one and older who weigh between 10 kg (22 pounds) and 20 kg (44 pounds). It is a belt-and-buckle device that works in conjunction with regular aircraft seat belts without interfering with the tray table behind.
